PAINTED PAPER COLLAGE WORKSHOP - ALL LEVELS

2 DAY WORKSHOP, Saturday & Sunday, March 12th & 13th, 9:30-4:00 - $250.

SUZANNE SIEGEL STUDIO

2351 BOSTON POST RD. - GUILFORD - BUILDING 2, SUITE 210

By nature, collage is a playful process, and can lead to more original and expressive ideas. Paper collage is a wonderful way to energize your work with new ideas, re-think design and color, take risks within a small format, produce quick studies for larger works – and the collages are genuine art works in their own right!

We will focus on color attributes and relationships, and elements of composition, especially shape, color, and texture. We will look at the work of several well-known contemporary and historical collage artists in a slide presentation, there will be demonstrations of each step of the process, and students learn to use the collage process in innovative ways to generate original ideas. This is a perfect workshop for anyone who wants to create/explore strong compositions and explore new color ideas. Group critiques and discussions will be held each day.

Each student should bring a pair of sharp scissors for cutting paper shapes, a large old towel or two, and a few reference images that they can use for ideas. For reference images, I suggest drawings, paintings, your own photos and/or good quality images by two or three well-known museum artists. All other materials will be supplied. Materials fee, $40.

Whether you work representationally or abstractly, or anywhere in between, you will learn several new approaches to creating more contemporary and meaningful paintings. Through guided exercises, slide presentations, individualized instruction, and group critiques, you will come away with new toolbox of ideas to use! Join us for a lively and instructive workshop exploring ways to use the wonderful medium of cold wax with oil paint, pigment powders, oil sticks, charcoal, and other media. Through a series of exercises, we will experiment with tools and marks, balancing intuitive and intentional approaches with the elements of design, including shape, value and color, as we compose abstract paintings with an understanding of structure. Students will receive individualized instruction, as they are encouraged to develop their own unique vision of abstraction, using both observed and non-objective forms. The Glory of Color and Approaches to Composition - Level I

2 or 3 day workshop, 9:30 – 4:30 dates tbd

It is said that value does the work, and color gets the glory. While there is truth in this idea, it leaves out the fact that color has intrinsic value, and this is a really important concept for all artists who work with color. In this workshop, we will examine three properties of color – hue, saturation, and value, and experiment with interactions of color, in depth. Through a series of exercises with mixing paint and painting small compositions, students will learn to see how color and value work together, and how to use the attributes of color to compose paintings that glow with their own inner light and keep the viewer interested in looking, and looking again and again. Students may work with oil, acrylic, or gouache, whichever medium they are most comfortable and familiar with. We will work on paper and canvas or panels. Hand-made, acrylic value scales will be available for purchase @ $10.- they are perfect for accurately assessing the value of a color in any medium.

STUDENT TESTIMONIALS

Suzanne is extremely prepared for her workshops, and her ability to help each student

wherever their artwork may be is a testement to her great teaching ability.

You will leave any of her workshops with many new tools. Thank you, Suzanne, for the knowledge you share.

Judy Chaves - judychaves.com

Suzanne is a great teacher. I studied with her for many years and I always felt safe

to try things I never had before without judgment but understanding.

As I progressed she was always able to push me further.

- David Schumann

I've taken many classes and workshops with Suzanne over several years. I totally enjoy her style of teaching.

I'm about to use several adjectives to describe Suzanne, and I'm selecting them with great thought...

She is calm, creative, prepared, a problem-solver, and very encouraging.

Suzanne has helped me greatly to progress in my art. No matter where I am in my art journey,

I always like to spend time with her and learn from her.

Anne Coffey - annecoffey.com

Suzanne is a talented teacher and coach who generously combines her vast knowledge and well-honed skills

to guide her students into a deeper understanding of the medium.

Her workshops are filled with loads of information and skill practice, then move on to skill application

that I find very satisfying. I delight in studying with her and do so at any opportunity.".....klhoffman

Suzanne is an inspiring instructor. She prepares well, sharing relevant materials and demos,

and supports participants with considerable individual attention,

generously sharing her art knowledge and experience... S. DalPonte

Suzanne's classes go way beyond the fundamental techniques of making art.

She is generous with helpful information that provides students with background and context

to develop individual and meaningful work.

Marj Jensen - marjoriejensen.com

I have participated in a number of Suzanne Siegel’s Workshops.

She is extremely well organized providing invaluable information and presenting it in such a way

that it is inspiring weather you are a beginner or a seasoned artist.

I started painted much later in life. I love the excitement of creating but yearned to know more

about composition, color, and overall good design.

Suzanne provides this information in a way that is understandable

and then follows up with a painting exercise that illustrated the concept.

I always leave with a sense that I learned so much and had fun along the way.

Sandi O'Brien

ART MENTORING

I am offering an art mentoring/critique program via email and phone conversations, beginning in mid-September.

The goal is to give artists individualized feedback on their artwork and help them to focus and develop a cohesive body of work. The artist will send me several images of their work by email. I will spend some time with the images and we follow that with a telephone conversation - up to 45 minutes - to discuss the work. Our conversation might focus on the process, the direction, the techniques, the elements of art, the body of work, etc. There are many possible areas to focus our discussion. The idea is to determine what the goals of the artist are and to work toward achieving those goals. Once a week brief emails in between telephone sessions are included, or if preferred, all conversations can be via email. The sessions can begin during any month.

I ask the artist to send me an artist's statement, their website if they have one, and to write out their short term goals for their work in a form that I will provide. They are asked to commit to a minimum of 3 sessions, one every 4-6 weeks is usually good. The cost for all 3 sessions @ one a month is $300. I will be able to work with a limited number of people at a time, so if you are interested in starting within the next 3-6 months, please let me know. For artists within 1.5 hours of New Haven CT, the mentoring sessions can take place at your studio.
